Origins of Caliban

I have been searching mythological reference books for information
about him. Did Shakespeare have a figure from world literature or
myth in mind when he created Caliban? My interest comes from listening
to "The Creative Fire" by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, in which she uses
the character of Caliban to illustrate the archetype of suppressed
creativity. Thanks for any info or insight you might have!!
