Shakespeare a required course?

I heard the other day teachers bemoaning the fact that students these days
are required the read the slave narrative but not to read Shakespeare. While
I certainly agree that everyone ought to read Shakespeare, I think that most
people WILL do so on their own (or at least see the movie) and that we don't
need to require Shakespeare for people to read him. I mean is there a Slave
Narrative discussion group? Will people actually read THOSE works if they
weren't required? Isn't the purpose of requiring students to read something
the result of not trusting them to read it on their own? Any thoughts?
