stepped, stepp'd, or steeped? III, iv, 136 Macbeth

I have always thought of the above line as:
I am in blood
Steeped in so far, that should I wade no more,
Returning were as tedious as go o'er

Now, it seems that every edition I pick up has stepped instead of steeped.
And comments? The two words have quite distinct meanings.
