Shylock says that Antonio "In low simplicity" ..."Lends out money gratis". It is the "simplicity" in juxtaposition with A's looking like a "fawning publican" that makes me think that Shylock might be assessing Antonio of playing the hypocrit and hates him for that more than the inevitable economic results of bringing "down the rates of usuage".Posted by Florence Amit on March 30, 1997 at 01:07:16
