Montague vs. Capulet

Why did the Montagues and the Capulets hate each other so much exactly? I haven't read the play since my freshman year. I recently saw the new "Romeo and Juliet" and the actual reason the families hate each other is simply brushed over. I couldn't understand literally why they hated each other (other than they just did) and so the objections to R&J's romance seemed ridiculuous. I'm sure dear Shakespeare explained everything for his humble audience--what was it?
