Is there a historical Hamlet?

(Please don't be fooled by my e-mail address. I _work_ at
a university, but I'm not a student.)

Were there actual historical counterparts to the characters
like Claudius, Hamlet, and Fortenbras? I know that Macbeth
is based on actual Scottish kings, and I'm wondering where
I can find some historical background on Hamlet.
