Haven't you heard of professional students?

No, seriously -- I am unaware of any interpretation that ascribes more than a few months to Hamlet's trip to England.
And, without knowing anything about Danish rules of succession, we could posit that, whatever his age, he was too young to be crowned king automatically upon his father's death.
